January 13th-15th, 2024 Snow Storm & Heated Driveway Time Lapse - Buffalo NY
On Friday January 12th, 2024, the Buffalo, NY area prepped for its first large storm of the winter season. It started Friday with High Wind Warnings and 60+ MPH gusts. On Friday night at approx 9:33 PM the wind took a large branch from the maple tree in my front yard, which smashed through one of my Pella casement windows on the front of the house.
On Saturday January 13th, the snow started and by 5 PM had accumulated around 1". The driveway was activated at 5:37 PM.
The snow continued off and on as the lake effect snow band moved north and south across the area, with the areas south of the city being hit the hardest (not me).

On January 25th, 2023, Buffalo was issued a Winter Weather Advisory with snow accumulation of 3-6 inches expected, and ice accumulations of a few hundredths of an inch. Winds of 45 MPH were also expected, making this a good "normal" Buffalo snowfall event for the driveway. As you'll see in the Timelapse, the snow begins around 8 AM, and continues throughout the day. I did not turn the system on...

I think you should engineer or purchase some sort of automated salt spreader for the driveway apron and sidewalk. You can set it up like some people do their mailbox at the end of the Street.
This year on March 4th 2024 after school Issaquah WA suddenly got snow! But snow melted quickly
your utility room looks wild. Great cable management, very clean!
Mesh, not steel or composite rebar?
*People. Be careful around that cap. It'll sting you. And if your ticker has issues, it might stop you.*
Wouldn't a car port cover for the driveway be cheaper.
are you a plumber by trade? thats some pretty impressive pipe work
Garbage Tote? Is that a New York thing. Rather than garbage can
Many thanks to you for all the hard work you have shared. We are much the same. Builders, fixers and problem solvers. I can 100% appreciate your entire journey to get this system installed and purring. Your journey has been inspirational and I look to use your exoerience as I build my own system.. There will always be naysayers. Those who lack the faith in themselves and therefore try to badmouth or minimize your accomplishment. Small minds are everywhere. That is their problem. Not your problem! Thanks for sharing. Great Job!
Nice sounding startup compared to mine. Looking forward to your solar videos.
Hello Sir, how do i purge my system? And not have the heater running?
Did you design this system??
Can you do the sidewalk also so you don’t have to shovel it or does the city own it?
You did it, this is every mans dream come true.
Hey Buddy I'm getting ready to fill my system up with water & glycol, diluted water, or spring water, I'm on well water here in NJ. Why did you use diluted vs spring water? Thank you!! Great video!!!!
Hey! I used distilled water because our local tap water has a lot of additives and minerals that I didn’t want in the closed system for the next several years. I think I had read somewhere that this was preferable, but not necessarily required. I picked it up at the dollar store for cheap, and just mixed it with my glycol in the tote like shown in the video. If you use the cryotek -100 like I did just be careful because it comes pre-diluted, so it takes a bit of figuring to get the mixture right. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!!
Great Advice!! I will use the distilled water, and setting up the same system you have, to fill mine !!! Thank you Sir !!!!
I think Asphalt sealing your driveway would save you a tremendous amount of money on heating your house, just tap into this and you would have warm water to send to your heat pump system.
Only thing I didn't like was the manabloc. They are hot garbage! But the pipe setup is beautiful!
Well done sir, great attention to detail
This would destroy the driveway if my mom was responsible for managing it.
May you find someone who loves you like this man loves his driveway
Dude, I love how clean and organized that setup looks.

Had nothing but issues after a year with this micro air. Almost fried my compressor, had an AC tech come out and he removed the easy start and no more issues with my AC unit. If it would’ve damaged my compressor would’ve been out a lot of money. My issue was the AC unit would kick on and blow hot air, verified currents and Freon was good. Removed the micro air and everything went back to normal.
@DeckerChristopherJ This is very helpful. I have a small private road, about 500FT in total. Think this would work in that application as well? The surface would be asphalt
Would not the liquid in the tubes freeze if you leave them off or was it with anti freeze coolant?
as a Florida native, i find this very interesting
Have you tried driving on it to break up the ice?
What are you doing to mitigate the slab cracking, or is the pipe below the slab?
First time seeing one of your videos....just my kinda channel.
Everyone is complimenting you on your work. I think it is cool that you save your kids stick collection.
how many KW and how much $ per session?
Micro-Air does make an install Kit, ($10) that includes a Large Piece of Self-Adhesive Tape, that will work great and not chance Drilling into a component on the A/C.
For my recirc I have smart switches at the hot water point of use. The recirc pump only runs when a light is switched on at one of those points of use. if someone uses the bathroom, the first thing they do is turn the light on. that triggers an automation that runs the recirc pump for 2 minutes so that when they are done with their business, hot water is there at the fixture for handwashing. it also runs for 5 minutes once a day to keep fresh water in the line.
We installed a Rinnai heater to replace a heatmate 250 heater, how ever the unit does not come on, we installed a tank thermostat and wired the pump to the thermostat, can you help me out please,
Great job. I'm considering doing this. I typically do not disassemble a brass swing check for installation. Just go easy on the flux, go easy on the heat, and use just enough solder to make the joint. there is nothing internally that can melt on these. but you do want to be careful you don't solder them shut. not taking them apart should solve 90% of the leaks on these.
This is precisely why igloos don't melt even though it's 70+ degrees inside. The ice melts from the direct heat until the air gap forms. The remaining ice hits an equilibrium where the cold from outside and the heat from below balances out and the ice remains frozen. That ice could stay frozen indefinitely until the outside temperature gets warm enough to break the balance. At 34 degrees it would have melted eventually but it would take another 20 hours assuming the temperature never changes. At 18 degrees it would likely have stayed frozen all day with little to no changes. With the slab at 79 degrees the air in between is probably closer to 40 degrees, and the outside temperature was 18. That means the average temperature of the water was still below freezing. These systems were never designed to melt an already frozen surface, they were designed to prevent ice buildup to begin with. Since they were out of town they couldn't put it on before the storm.
I like watching winter on youtube from Florida. Its so pretty. Cool that you have a heated driveway.
I've been watching this video for 48 hours straight. Someone please help😂
will be moving to the north in a few months... and.... while i dont see this happening soon... man I want one.. and really interesting to see the design process....
Could this be put on the bridge? 4 or 5 lane road. or an intersection ? Cost?
They should call that "thermal barrier" instead of "thermal bridge".
If those Takagi units are like mine you need to trick them to close the bypass valve. It looks like your vinegar didn’t go into the heat exchanger at all. It went through the open bypass valve and out the hot side. What you need to do is run the heater as hot as it will go (probably 140) for a minute then unplug it. This will keep the bypass valve closed. Also from the Takagi descaling instructions “please note that vinegar is known to be ineffective at removing scale” I found this little factoid after hours of using vinegar. I just ordered Haymaker descaler.
You seem like one of the nicest people in the world man. Would love to have ya as a buddy! Great video!

The only cleared driveway on the street.
You haven't figured in the cost of ice melt chems and the damage to your concrete
Should have gotten the curling stones and brooms out for a bit of curling before you started to melt the ice 🤔😁
This is definitely a system that would be hard to pay for itself. $10,000 invested will give you a decent yearly return, which is almost never entered into the payback periods for such an investment. Still, Bravo! It is an excellent hobby for sure.
